How to measure a window for new curtains
Correctly measuring the height of the curtain is key to achieving the desired look and functionality. Before you start measuring, decide what style and effect you want to create in your interior. Curtains can extend from the top of the window to the sill, they can slightly overhang below the sill or you may prefer curtains that extend to the floor for a more distinctive and elegant feel.
- Curtain ending at the window sill – ideal for kitchens or where you don’t want curtains to interfere with the work area. Measure from the top edge where the curtain will hang to the bottom edge of the window sill.
- Curtain ending below the sill – if you’re looking for a balanced look that lends elegance to the window without the curtain reaching all the way to the floor, have the curtain end approximately 10-15cm below the sill. This style is suitable for living rooms or bedrooms.
- Curtain that extends just above the floor – For maximum elegance and the illusion of higher ceilings, choose curtains that end just above the floor. This style adds a sense of luxury and is ideal for formal areas of your home.
In any case, we recommend adding 2-3 cm to the bottom edge for a more precise and professional look if your curtain will be tailored.
How to correctly measure the width of the curtain
- Curtains across the window: This style of curtains provides full coverage and privacy. Measure the width of the window frame and add enough width on each side for drapery, typically at least double for a rich, full look. So for a 150 cm wide window, the curtain should be at least 300 cm wide.
- Centrally divided curtains: These curtains create elegant symmetry and can be pushed to the sides to create an ‘open’ look. They are similar to the way curtains are partitioned in a cinema.
For both types of curtains, we recommend choosing a curtain width at least twice the width of the window for proper drape. For example, if your window is 150 cm wide, you should choose a curtain that is at least 300 cm wide. This 1:2 rule will ensure that your curtains will be beautifully full and create a rich and appealing look when draped.
